Geography Department
- Geographic education, comprising both theoretical and professional studies, is open to all students coming from different high school disciplines. Actually, there is a great difference in teaching geography between universities and high schools.
- The teaching program, previously approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, is definitely decided by the faculty members of the department of geography. In fact, mentors can extend their teaching by incorporating their research in the various fields to their lectures. This include, paleoenvironments, protected regions, saving monuments, the changes in the rural landscapes, urbanism, hydrology and the study of the present major ecological issues.
The educational program at the University of Saint-Etienne covers a wide range of topics including epistemology, the history of geography, geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, biogeography (biomass geographic distribution), economic and social geography, urbanism and mobility, urban and rural geography, cultural and political geography.
Furthermore, the “LMD” (Licence, Master, and Doctorate) curriculum encompass the training of the different space analysis tools: statistics, mapping, SIG, photo-interpretation, and remote sensing. - The first two years of the undergraduate degree are an opportunity to expand the learning methods, methodologies, and theoretical bases. The educational program provides a multidisciplinary training which permits sharing courses with the bachelor of history; It includes courses of social and political sciences. The major/specialty will be decided in the 3rd year.
- The educational program is in direct contact with the recent world evolution and modern society’s. It also opens up several job opportunities, that are associated with the recent problems affecting the universe such as environmental concerns, national security or urbanism.

- The Bachelor's degree in Geography and Spatial Planning depends on three vital factors:
- The acquisition of basic knowledge in whole subjects of the discipline: Human and social
geography, environmental and physical geography, regional geography, history and didactics of
geography. - Introduction to understanding the tools and techniques of the field: Geographical software
(geomatics), spatial images, and area maps and reading maps, mapping, survey techniques, and
statistics, etc... - The acquisition of complementary knowledge (language, computer sciences, history) which
allow students to prepare in the 3rd year towards their future career in teaching or other local
jobs.
- Beyond the Bachelor’s degree, students are able to continue their higher education in Saint-Etienne
within the field of geography:

OPPORTUNITIES TO:
- Many, but it is recommended for all students to continue their studies until they obtain the Master
degree in order to give them a chance to find a good job. Jobs that require conceptual tools and space
analysis techniques became more popular. The Department of Geography at Jean Monnet University
in Saint-Etienne is particularly known for its quality of work in this domain.
